CTR Group is seeking several Environmental Health and Safety Coordinator local to the Norfolk, VA area.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Reports to the EHS Supervisor.
  • Maintains internal contacts with all departments, primarily Production Managers and Shop Foremen.
  • Maintains healthy relationships with Customers, Host Facilities, and Service Providers (vendors, contractors, and subcontractors).
  • Assigns duties to and guides the activities of 5S Laborers.
  • Conducts daily EHS inspections of assigned areas ensuring that all operations (including those of Sub-Contractors) are in compliance with Federal, State and local regulations and the Company EHS Policies and Procedures; identify EHS hazards or deficiencies and initiates corrective action through production supervision.
  • Prepares written reports on inspections, accident investigations, statistical information on discrepancies and corrections.
  • Reviews documentation and identifies deficiencies and potential problems.
  • Supervises and conducts inspections throughout the organization and ensure all operations (including subcontractors) to ensure compliance with EHS policies and work instructions.
  • Identifies EHS hazards or deficiencies and initiate corrective action.
  • Reviews current literature and trade publications in order to remain current regarding OSHA, EPA and other applicable EHS standards and regulations.
  • Establishes a close working relationship and communicate with Department Managers, Project Managers, and Ship Superintendents on a regular basis. Other responsibilities and duties as assigned.
  • EHS 5S Coordinators are responsible for ensuring that all EHS legislation is adhered to and policies and practices are followed.  
  • They help to plan, implement, monitor and review the protective and preventative measures that companies are required or choose to follow, and work to minimize operational losses, occupational health problems, accidents, injuries, spills, and releases to the environment.
  • Effectively help support the EHS Leadership Team, providing maximum value to the Company EHS posture.
  • Provide Production Managers and Supervisors with the tools necessary to provide a safe working environment for employees.
  • Assist in the elimination of at-risk conditions and behaviors.
  • Enforce EHS policy and procedures.
REQUIREMENTS:
  • The EHS Coordinator candidate typically has experience in Industrial Safety or Environmental Compliance or 5-7 years of shipyard EHS experience and 2 years of Coordinator experience.
  • Committed to the safety mission and its vision and values, adapts and remains flexible, perform ethically, and self-manages efficiently and professionally.
  • Extensive knowledge of ship repair or other manufacturing operations, facilities, processes and operating procedures to understand the impact that Federal, State and Local regulations is beneficial.
  • Applicable Federal, State and local EHS regulations (1915, 1910, EPA).
  • Presentation techniques for EHS training.
  • Techniques used to recognize HS hazards and environmental risks.
  • Working with and management of hazardous materials and wastes.
  • Ship configuration, shipbuilding techniques and operations.
  • Safe operation of tools and machinery.
  • Ensure employees are adequately protected from hazards and protect the environment, by monitoring the workplaces frequently to identify unsafe or unhealthful conditions and actual/potential spills or releases into the environment.
  • Take prompt action to correct hazardous conditions and releases to the environment.
  • If serious hazards identified, must take immediate interim action to safeguard employees and protect the environment.
  • Report all unsafe or unhealthful conditions and actual/potential releases to the Environment.
  • Seek suggestions from employees for improvement of workplace conditions and environmental stewardship.
  • Must be able to read and write effectively; ability to accurately interpret federal, state, and company policies and verbally communicate same to employees.
  • Intermediate math, computer, telephone, radio, and camera skills.
  • Must be able to use reference materials, employs organizational skills, and uses time and resources effectively to actively promote safety, solve problems, and implement best management processes.
  • Preferred certifications: Certified Hazardous Material Manager, 40 Hour HAZWOPER Certification, DOT Training, EHSMS auditor certifications, emergency first aid, bloodborne pathogen, Shipyard Competent person training, OSHA 5410, OSHA 3095, Certified Safety 
  • Professional and other specific related training to EHS program management. 
    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to vapors, gases, dust, welding/burning fumes, and smoke.
  • The employee must be able to spend up to 25% of time in an outdoor shipyard environment in all climates.
  • The noise level is usually moderate to extremely noisy 75% of the time, which may include sirens, horns, chipping, and hammering.
  • Must be able to gain access to all work locations including government and private shipyards and/or vessels.
