Job Summary:
The Temporary Services Electrician will be responsible for performing electrical tasks on submarines that are in dry dock at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. This role involves installing, maintaining, and repairing electrical systems and components to ensure operational readiness and compliance with Navy standards while the submarine is out of the water.
Key Responsibilities:
Electrical System Installation and Maintenance:
Install, maintain, and repair electrical systems and equipment on submarines in dry dock, including lighting, power distribution, and control systems.
Conduct inspections and perform necessary repairs to ensure systems meet Navy specifications and operational requirements.
Technical Documentation:
Read and interpret electrical installation drawings, schematics, wiring diagrams, and work packages.
Use technical documentation to guide installation, maintenance, and repair activities accurately.
Electrical Testing and Troubleshooting:
Employ basic electrical meters and test instruments (volt-ohm meters, clamp-on ammeters, insulation resistance testers) to troubleshoot and diagnose electrical issues.
Perform thorough testing to confirm systems are functioning correctly and safely.
General Electrical Work:
Carry out general electrical tasks such as installing and mounting electrical equipment, setting up cable penetrations, and handling cable installations and terminations.
Execute cut-ins and hook-ups for various electrical systems.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds regularly and up to 75 pounds occasionally.
- Capable of standing, walking, bending, and crouching for extended periods in tight or confined spaces.
- Must be able to work at various heights, including climbing ladders and working on scaffolding.
- Ability to work in various environmental conditions, including exposure to extreme heat, cold, and potentially hazardous environments.
- Dexterity to handle small tools and electrical components.
- Must have good vision, including the ability to distinguish colors for wiring.
