A leading U.S. shipbuilding contractor is seeking experienced Shipfitters to support new‑construction and module‑assembly work at a large commercial shipyard in Philadelphia. This role involves heavy structural fabrication, layout, fit‑up, and assembly of steel components in accordance with shipyard standards, drawings, and safety requirements.
Candidates must have strong blueprint interpretation skills and hands‑on experience working with plate, bulkheads, foundations, and structural assemblies in a shipyard or heavy‑industrial environment.
Key Responsibilities
Perform layout, fit‑up, and alignment of structural components including bulkheads, decks, frames, foundations, and modules.
Read and interpret blueprints, sketches, and ship construction drawings.
Use measuring tools such as levels, squares, plumb bobs, tape measures, and micrometers to ensure accuracy.
Prepare steel for welding through grinding, beveling, reaming, drilling, and cutting.
Install foundations, brackets, stiffeners, and structural supports.
Perform tack welding as required for fit‑up (not production welding).
Conduct burning, heating, and straightening operations as needed.
Work safely in confined spaces, at heights, and aboard vessels or modules.
Follow all shipyard safety procedures, including lockout/tagout and hot‑work protocols.
Required Experience & Qualifications
3–5+ years of shipfitting or heavy‑steel fabrication experience in a shipyard or industrial environment.
Strong understanding of structural steel assembly and ship construction practices.
Ability to read and interpret detailed blueprints and structural drawings.
Proficiency with grinders, torches, magnetic drills, reamers, and other fabrication tools.
Ability to work in a fast‑paced production environment with tight tolerances.
Must be able to pass all required background checks, drug screening, and site‑specific training.
